Ernest H. Weiner

Distinguished Lifetime Service Award Honoree

The American Jewish Committee is delighted to honor Ernie Weiner with its Distinguished Lifetime Service Award for his decades of devotion and skill in pursuit of a secure Israel, a vital and thriving Jewish people, and a more tolerant world for all to share.

For 38 years Ernie served as AJC's Executive Director in Northern California, based in San Francisco.  An expert in intergroup relations and foreign affairs, his articles and commentary appeared frequently in the San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News and he is often called upon as a guest speaker for radio and television.  A professional journalist for more than 25 years, Ernie has reported and written for newspapers, and magazines, and served for 11 years as the host of the weekly Bay Area radio program "Jewish Perspective".  He received his M.A. from the University of Missouri in 1950, where he was later a feature writer for its Public Information Bureau and a faculty member in its School of Journalism and College of Arts and Letters.

During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army in combat in Europe in 1944 and 1945, with American Forces in the Philippines, and with the occupation troops in Japan in 1945 - 1946.  A former amateur boxer, Ernie was Chairman of the California State Athletic Commission and worked to establish health and welfare standards for boxers.  His active memberships include the Jewish War Veterans of the USA, Hadassah Associates, AIPAC and the Northern California Veteran Boxers Association.  He is on the boards of American Friends of Koret Israel Economic Development Funds and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Northern California.  In addition, Ernie serves as Deputy to Tad Taube, the Honorary Consul of Poland.  He and his wife Shirley have four children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

We express special thanks to Zealear Cellars and Dan Weiner for the red wine and to Nurserymen’s Exchange and the Pearlstein Family for the floral arrangements.
